Work Injuries: Beyond the Physical
28 Sep 2018 | William J. Kropach | On The Job Injury

The Internet is a blessing and a curse. The internet allows us to search endlessly for answers to a myriad of questions. It is a highway for electronic communication that enables us to move information quickly and efficiently. Almost all communication is via email or some kind of internal messenger program. During the work day, this feature helps collaborate projects and streamline deadlines. But, this technology has also seeped into our private lives; our off-the-clock lives. Around 50% of Americans today check the email before bed. It is not distinguished between work or personal email, but regardless, communication is reviewed before going to bed. This may some trivial, but if you are already juggling a lot of projects at work, receiving an email about any of the projects could lead to stress seeping into your personal life instead of while you are at work. This can cause some serious stress.

There are many web articles that you can find about managing stress. One suggests that you should create an “email budget” which will help you devote time to other, more important tasks. The author also suggests that you should turn off your email notification as this can be distracting and encourages you to keep checking your email. This is a really good strategy, but what if the culture of your job does not allow this kind of behavior? What if your stress level is already to a point of medical condition?
