Tesla Used Lyft Instead Of Ambulances For Workers
9 Nov 2018 | William J. Kropach | On The Job Injury

It seems like each week we hear new stories about the horrors of working in a Tesla factory. Whether it is unsafe working conditions, low pay, or a high-stress environment, Tesla has its work cut out for it.

Now, we have heard that the company used the ridesharing service Lyft to transport patients to the hospital instead of calling an ambulance.

Among other things, Fortune reported that:

  • Medical staff at Tesla must ask for permission before calling 911.
  • Medical staff would send workers back to the production line without any treatment or painkillers after an injury.

Anna Watson, a physicians assistant who worked for Tesla’s in-house medical clinic, said that “The goal of the clinic was to keep as many patients off the books as possible.”

At the Law Offices of Kropach & Kropach, we know this is not an uncommon practice for many companies. They try to hide injuries so that their insurance premiums do not increase and they want to seem like a safe place to work.

All of this can be detrimental to worker health. If you need a Los Angeles on-the-job injury attorney, we will work to secure the compensation you deserve for your accident-related expenses.

What Happens?

Often, employees are injured due to working conditions.

  • Overworked employees are much more likely to get into accidents. This may happen because employers force their employees to work too many hours without breaks. This becomes even more of a problem when employees work around heavy machinery and equipment.
  • If employees do not have enough training, they are a danger to themselves and those around them. All employees need to know and follow safety protocols and they should also be trained to use all equipment that is necessary to perform their job.
  • If employers do not provide proper safety gear, they could be held liable for injuries that occur. This includes ensuring that all employees have proper clothing (pants, shirts, boots, gloves) as well as other necessary safety gear (eyewear, helmets, respiratory equipment, etc.).
    • For the latest reporting year in California, there were over 466,000 nonfatal workplace injuries and illnesses reported. Many of these injuries could be prevented if proper safety measures are taken by employers.

If an accident does cause injury, employers need to ensure they seek prompt medical treatment for their worker.
