What happened in this incident?

We want to bring you a story from a little out or our coverage area because we think it highlights some issues that we regularly discuss concerning workplace safety. A construction worker has been killed in an incident that happened at Disneyland. Authorities say that a man working in a backstage area in a trench in the early morning hours of Aug. 30 was struck by a large steel plate after a piece of equipment accidentally struck a cross beam and knocked it down.

Anaheim police say the injured worker was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The man’s identity has not yet been released. A state agency investigating the incident says that the 38-year-old man worked for a contractor.

Disneyland Resort released a statement extending their sympathies to the man’s family.

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health says they are investigating the incident.

Workplace accidents are largely preventable

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) says that there were approximately 2.8 million workplace injuries and illnesses during the latest reporting year of data available. OSHA tells us that during that same year, there were 5,147 worker deaths. Many of those were in the construction industry. Construction does have risks, and OSHA lists the top four causes of construction deaths as:

  • Falls
  • Getting struck by objects
  • Electrocutions
  • Getting caught in between objects

It is vital that construction companies give their workers the proper equipment and safety training necessary for all aspects of their job.
