California Railroad Worker Caught Between Converging Trains

On the Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway track, a worker fell and became trapped. As the two trains converged, the 40-year-old employee was crushed to death. Authorities have not released a name. The employee was a BNSF Railway worker.

The railroad released a statement, “The entire BNSF family is terribly saddened by this event and we extend our deepest sympathy and thoughts to the family and loved ones of the employee involved in this incident.”

The National Transportation Safety Board will conduct an investigation with the Buena Park Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department.

Railroad Workers Killed in the Line of Duty Continue to Rising

In reaction to railroad workers growing death rate, Railroad Workers United believe most of the deaths were preventable. According to their data, there were 4,800 workers killed on the job in the last reporting year.

The law states there are to be certain safety measures in place to protect workers. However, many are coming forward and expressing concern that no one is enforcing those safety measures. The governing organizations that are to provide oversight are losing funding to do so. As a result, an already hazardous occupation is becoming more dangerous. Other workers have expressed concern that corporate-owned railways create safety programs that place the burden of safety on the worker instead of the facility.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

  • There were 5,147 workplace fatalities in the US
  • 887 were due to falls
  • This is the highest level reported in 26 years

The BNSF railroad worker who fell became trapped, and was subsequently crushed, will add to the grim statistics. If you have lost a loved one in a preventable accident in the workplace, do not hesitate. Call the Law Offices of Kropach & Kropach today.
